Using IndexingService without IIS

Is it possible to register and start the IndexingService manually without using the CMS Manager?

I might be missing something obvious here but I'm using Vista and developing in Visual Studio 2005, testing the site with the "Development Server"... I can't seem to find a way to register/start/setup the Indexing service in the CMS Manager against that server, isn't it possible to use the IndexingService without using IIS.
